Look back at 2024

Happy New Year Everyone! I wish all of y’all a happy and healthy new year.

I Typed my first words of this post with a very downer note, but upon reflecting the year past my mood was lifted. It got me excited for what to come!

Here’s the best of 2024, in chronological order.

Ran my first 5K Marathon

February, 2024 - Race Course Colombo 7

It has been a good couple of years since I started training for a run with the Couch to 5K program, It was not easy with restarting the program multiple times in the span of years, but I trusted the system and trained through.

Was excited to take part in this charity run, was doubtful if I’d complete but the atmosphere and energy at Run For Their Lives was amazing. I was able to complete 5KM in 33 minutes which I was happy about.

Bought a house

April, 2024 - Battaramulla

I Always wanted a place of my own but wasn’t actively searching. Was fortunate to be offered a deal that was too-good to let go. It was a house built in the 90’s but needed some attention as it was left abandoned for a couple of years.

I was able to work out a mortgage with my bank. My naïveté assumed that’s all to be done. I was in for a ride with this one.

Got Married

May, 2024 - St. Mary’s Church Bambalapitiya

We got married, It was a beautiful day which started a new chapter in our lives, where it’s no longer “I” but “We”. My wife moved to Colombo from her hometown Kandy which was not easy, but I’m so grateful. I’m so happy and lucky to have her by my side.

As for the ceremony1 itself, there was a lot of planning involved throughout 2023 leading to the day, but it was great to celebrate among family and friends.

Renovating

July, 2024 (Ongoing) - Battaramulla

We are still renovating the house, good news is that we will be able to move in a couple of weeks. It was a long, often frustrating process. But it will all be justified once we move in and make this house a home.

The last couple of months were packed with swatches, checking vendors and a lot of “Hmmm, what do you think?”. But we’re excited to move in!

There was a lot of learnings doing this, I shall write a bit more about it later.

Axi

August, 2024 - Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte

I was driving back home from friends one rainy night, and a kitten appeared in-front of my car and got knocked by the bumper. The cat distribution system has struck again.

Took her to the vet, and she was okay, it was apparent that she has always been a bit clumsy. Not so graceful jumping from high trees like our cat “Ashey” who was not amused by the new guest.

I took her back home (living with my parents until the house is complete) and everyone loves her. Dad named the cat “Axi” short for “Accident” which I found amusing. Axi has been a constant source of cute chaos around the house, which made the year very memorable.

Looking Forward

There are a couple of things I was critical about, which I intend to justify in this new year.

  1. Get healthy, again - I fell off the wagon again, gained back most of my weight. I do know where I went wrong.
  2. Be a better husband - I want to be a better partner. Doing my best and learning!
  3. Better manage my finances with the new circumstances - New responsibilities, my simple finance playbook won’t fly.
  4. Read and write more - My past time has become binging copious amount of YouTube, I need to better use my time.

Edits/Updates

  • (2025/01/02) My wife reminded me that I forgot to talk about the cat, Axi was a highlight in the year, so added a section.

  1. It was actually two ceremonies, we had one at the church and a traditional Sri Lankan poruwa ceremony in June. ↩︎
